Where Do I Start?
Decluttering Basics
Downsizing or decluttering your home can feel overwhelming. The memories, the furniture, the photos, the full cupboards and packed garage… where do you even begin?
At Less is More, we support Aucklanders through every stage of decluttering. Whether you’re preparing for a move to a more compact home, a retirement village, or just want to reclaim your space, these basics will help you get started—with confidence.
1: Know Your Why
Are you moving? Making space? Preparing for the future? Knowing your motivation will help guide your decisions about what to keep and what to let go.
2: Start Small and Start Now
You don’t need to tackle the whole house at once. Begin with:
- A single drawer in the kitchen
- A bathroom cabinet
- One box in the garage
Each win builds momentum. Starting early means less pressure later on.
3: Focus on the “Must-Keep” Items First
Instead of asking what to get rid of, ask:
- What do I use?
- What do I love?
- What will fit in my next home?
- What could have a second life elsewhere?
If you’re moving, get a floor plan early so you know what furniture and storage will realistically fit.
4: Don’t Do It Alone
Downsizing is emotional and physical work. Get help from:
- A professional (like us!)
- A trusted friend or family member
- Your future retirement village (some offer support services)
Outside help keeps you focused and gently moving forward.
5: Make a Plan with a Timeline
Set a moving date (or target goal), then work backwards. Book in key dates for:
- Sorting and decluttering
- Donation pickups
- Movers, packers or storage
- Final cleaning and real estate photography
