Why we called our business Less is More

And why the phrase means more than you think

At first glance, Less is More might seem like a catchy slogan or a minimalist design mantra. But it's actually a powerful, time-tested idea that’s inspired poets, architects, artists, environmentalists—and now, a small Auckland-based business helping people move forward with less stress and less stuff.

Here's a quick look at where the phrase comes from, what it really means, and why we chose it for our business name.

Where “Less is More” Comes From

The phrase is widely associated with modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who used it to describe his design philosophy: clean lines, open spaces, and no unnecessary decoration. He believed that simplicity wasn’t about having less—it was about making more of what really matters.

But the idea actually goes back even further.

In 1855, poet Robert Browning used the phrase in his poem Andrea del Sarto, where a painter reflects that simple works can sometimes hold more emotional depth than technically complex ones.

And even further back? The ancient Greeks were all for it. A famous saying attributed to Chilon of the Spartan School — “To λακωνίζειν εστί φιλοσοφείν”—means “brevity is the soul of wisdom.” The idea that clarity, simplicity, and focus can lead to greater positive impact has echoed through centuries of thought.

What “Less is More” Really Means

At its core, less is more is a philosophical concept. It suggests that simplicity and minimalism can be more effective, beautiful, and satisfying than complexity and excess. When you remove the noise, what’s left can speak more loudly and clearly and there is space for creativity.

This idea shows up across many areas of life:

  • Architecture & Design: Clean, functional, and beautiful spaces without unnecessary clutter.
  • Art & Literature: Impactful imagery or storytelling using fewer strokes or simpler language.
  • Lifestyle & Well-being: Minimalism helps us reduce distractions and focus on what brings meaning.
  • Economics & Sustainability: In his book Less is More, economist Jason Hickel argues that embracing simplicity is key to building a sustainable future and rebalancing our relationship with the planet.
  • Everyday Life: Streamlining your to-do list, saying more with fewer words, or making space—physically and mentally—for what really matters.
